Make-Up Day Policy

Whether it is a sick child, a last minute dentist appointment or a really bad night’s sleep, we understand that sometimes a day of school has to be missed.

Our make-up day policy allows you 30 days from the day a student is absent, to make up that day.

Note the following terms:

  1. Notification of absence must be given by 9:30am on the day your child will be absent. There is a $10.00 per day no-show fee if notice isn’t given.  Additionally, if notification is not given there will be no makeup day.
  2. There is a maximum of four make-up days per month. For example, if six days in a month are missed only four of those days may be made up.
  3. Requests for makeup days must be made at least 24 hours in advance, in writing, of the date you would like your child to attend to make-up the absence. If that time is unavailable, we will let you know as soon as possible.  Space is very limited, it is recommended that you request your makeup day(s) a week in advance.
  4. If you are unable to attend the scheduled make-up day, please give us at least 24 hours notice, otherwise the original make-up day will be forfeited.
  5. Make-up days are not available for days that Ka Hana Pono is scheduled to be closed.
  6. No Discounts / Refunds / Pro-Rates of monthly tuition will be given for illness, vacations, or temporary absences.
  7. If your child will be absent for any period of time such as a two-week or one month vacation or for any other reason, to hold your child’s place in our program the monthly tuition would need to continue to be paid.
  8. Your monthly tuition statements and receipts will note any absences and track make-up days.

Little Things Matter: The Impact of Toxins on the Developing Brain

The Canadian Environmental Health Atlas has been studying the impact of toxins on children for the past 30 years and reached the inescapable conclusion: little things matter. We’ve discovered that extremely low levels of toxins can impact brain development. We have also discovered that subtle shifts in the intellectual abilities of individual children have a big impact on the number of children in a population that are challenged or gifted. Steps should be taken to reduce children's exposure to toxins or suspected toxins.

Farm to Table to Farm

Today the children had a blast planting their non-GMO papaya breakfast in the garden!  :)  They collected the seeds, de-skinned the seeds, learned about top soil and filled the pots, and planted the seeds!

Purple Sweet Potato Patch (Non-Gmo)

Today the children proudly planted a non-genetically modified (non-GMO) purple sweet potato patch!

*a note from uncle bison:
Moms and Dads please remember that if chemical agriculture corporations like Monsanto Pioneer Dow and DuPont genetically engineer and patent these potatoes we may not be able to do this again without paying a lot of money, wearing hazmat suits, and spraying deadly chemicals on them due to their genetic modification.  We would also be risking getting sued and losing our business.

Because I love life, people, you & your children & I think it’s wrong to patent life and use un-relaible science to push the use of known toxins proven to be harmful to humans.

Chemical agriculture / biotech has already made it almost impossible for your children and KHP or any family on the north shore to grow corn, sunflowers, arugula & some other crops they have patents on since pollen can drift for miles and the now endangered bumblebees, monarch butterflies & other pollinators will contaminate our organic seed crops giving these chemical agriculture corporations the right to pull our crops and sue us since they can't sue the wind or bumblebees.

Genetic engineering of food crops has been a stealth technology, introduced with little public debate and arriving on grocery shelves unlabeled.
I take no position regarding genetic engineering done in labs or in indoor manufacturing of pharmaceuticals. But common sense should warn us that commercial development of out-of-doors applications in the absence of environmental safeguards is a prescription for disaster.
I oppose the out-of-doors deployment of genetic technologies because the genes are free - as free as pollen on the wind - to invade nature, and because once this has happened they can't be recalled.

Sincerely,

Uncle Bison
